Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e VulcanologiaThe Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, Osservatorio Etneo, Sezione di Catania, conducts research monitoring, and surveillance in the fields of geophysics and volcanology. It is in charge of monitoring the eruptive activity of Etna, Eolian Islands, and other Sicilian volcanoes, promoting also a profitable exchange among researchers of Italy and abroad. This duty is carried out in close collaboration with the Civil Defense. The Operations Room of the Etna Observatory carries out seismic and volcanic surveillance on the Sicilian territory, according to the Program Agreement between the INGV and the Department of Civil Defense. This 24/7 service consists of continuous 8:20-hour-long surveillance shifts by two staff members assisted by 8 specialized staff members on duty. The surveillance is handled within the Working Group for the Operations Room and Information Technology Services (UFSO-IT) of the Etna Observatory.
